Young Harris doubles its way past Brevard 16-11

BREVARD, N.C. –  A seven-run sixth inning helped Young Harris College rally for a 16-11 baseball victory over Brevard College Wednesday (March 13) afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

The Mountain Lions improved to 10-9 while the Tornados fell to 9-17. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference play Saturday (March 16) when they travel to Aiken, S.C., for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against No. 13 University of South Carolina Aiken.

Brevard had taken an 8-3 after the Tornados scored six times in the bottom of the fifth. Zach Bricknell started the comeback as he slapped a two-run homer - his team-leading sixth of the season – over the left field fence in the sixth ininng. Young Harris saw nine of its 14 base hits go for extra bases, including a college-record eight doubles.

Spencer Thomas added a RBI single and Adam Moore stroked an RBI double – one of three in the game – to pull the Mountain Lions within a run at 8-7. Trey Rogers gave Young Harris a 9-8 lead with his two-run single to left. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run on David Atwood's ground out.

The Mountain Lions added three runs an inning later to take a 13-8 lead as they took advantage of two Brevard errors. After Brevard scored three times in the bottom of the eighth, Young Harris got them right back in the top of the ninth as Jack Morrow and Dom Wyshinski had RBI doubles and Atwood singled home the final run.

Aaron Barfield (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Mountain Lions while Justin Cooper pitched the final two innings to earn his first save. Heath Blackmon (0-1) took the loss for the Tornados.

Moore and Rogers led the Mountain Lions with 3 RBI while Moore added three hits. Thomas, Morrow, Atwood and Bowen Klosinski each tallied two hits while Morrow, Atwood and Bricknell each drove in two runs.
