USC Aiken sweeps doubleheader from Mountain Lions

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken banged out 37 hits as the 13th-ranked Pacers swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (March 16) afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

USC Aiken won the opener 18-8 and took the nightcap 13-4. The Pacers improved to 19-5 overall and to 8-3 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 10-11 and 2-9. The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday (March 17).

The two teams exchanged leads back and forth through the first five innings of the opener. Young Harris tied the game at 5 on Trey Rogers' sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth and took its final lead an inning later on an RBI single by Zach Bricknell.

The Pacers reclaimed the lead at 7-5 in their half of the fifth as Ty Barkell hit the first offering he saw from reliever Cody Beck (2-2) over the center field wall for a two-run homer. Barkell, who also homer in the second game, has five homers for 2013.

USC Aiken broke the game open in the six as they scored six runs to open a 13-6 lead. The big hits in the inning can on Ben Donath's two-run single and John Fidanza added a bases-clearing double just inside the right-field line.

Young Harris collected 18 hits in game one. Dom Wyshinski had three hits while Adam Moore, Rogers, Jack Morrow, Tom Valichka and Bricknell each had two. Spencer Thomas drove in two runs for the Mountain Lions.

The Pacers took control of the second game as they scored five runs in the first and added four more in the second to open up a 9-2 advantage off Moore (2-2). Bill Gerstenslager had a two-run double and Ryan Metzler had a two-run homer for the Pacers in the first inning as they took a 5-1 lead.

Bowen Klosinski hit his first homer of the season for the Mountain Lions in the second to cut the lead to 5-2, but USC Aiken added four more runs in its half to take a 9-2 lead.

Morrow collected two hits for the Mountain Lions in game two while Thomas reach base all five times by coaxing walks from the Pacers pitching corps.
