PEMBROKE, N.C. – David Atwood's two-run single down the left field line in the 10th inning capped a wild comeback as Young Harris College rallied for a 14-12 10-inning Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Sunday (March 10) afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.
The Mountain Lions leveled their record at 9-9 and improved to 2-7 in the conference while the Braves fell to 16-6 and 6-6. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (March 13) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Brevard, N.C., for a contest against Brevard College.
Young Harris opened the game with an eight-run first inning, but had to send the game into extra innings when Zach Bricknell hit the first pitch he saw in the top of the ninth for a three-run homer to right field to tie the game at 12. It was Bricknell's fifth of the season.
Jack Morrow and Dom Wyshinski started the 10th with back-to-back singles off UNCP reliever Aaron Spano (1-4). Both runners moved up 90 feet on Tom Valichka's sacrifice bunt and then came around to score on Atwood's game-winning hit.
Young Harris reliever Justin Cooper (2-3) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning to earn the win.
As a team, the Mountain Lions collected 18 hits. Every starter had at least a hit and seven of them had at least two. Atwood drove in four runs on the day while Morrow and Bricknell each had three RBI. Morrow and Wyshinski led Young Harris with three hits apiece.
In the first inning, Young Harris scored all eight runs after two were out. Morrow had a two-run homer while Atwood contributed a two-run triple and Spencer Thomas added a two-run double. Trey Rogers also drove in a run with a double to right-center field.
Morrow, who leads the Mountain Lions with six homers in 2013, added a solo shot to center in the seventh inning.
