YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Three Young Harris College errors led to six unearned runs as Brevard College registered a 7-3 non-conference baseball victory over the Mountain Lions Friday (Feb. 8) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field in the season opener for both teams.

Brevard improves to 1-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-1. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 9) at noon.

Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the second as Zach Bricknell and Tom Valichka each started the rally with walks. Mike Medori stroked a two-out RBI single to score Bricknell while Spencer Thomas followed with a run-scoring double.

The Tornados put an unearned run in the third and then added five more on two Young Harris errors an inning later. Eric Renegar had a two-run single in the fourth while Bennett Hixson had a RBI double in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead off Young Harris starter Justin Cooper (0-1)..

The Mountain Lions got their final run in the eighth as Bricknell had a RBI groundout. Young Harris had the bases loaded in the inning but reliever Chad Fisher, who earned his first save, wiggled out of inherited trouble by getting the final two outs of the inning. Fisher struck out four of the five batters he faced.

Kevin Hamilton (1-0) struck out five to earn the win in six innings of work.
