Mountain Lion sweeps doubleheader from Skyhawks

WEST POINT, Ga. – Young Harris College ran its winning streak to five as the Mountain Lions swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Point University Sunday (Feb. 17) afternoon at the City Park Baseball Field. Young Harris won the opener 6-2 before taking game two 13-1.

The Mountain Lions improved to 5-2 while the Skyhawks fell to 4-4. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (Feb. 19) with a 3 p.m. contest against the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga.

In the opener, Young Harris put together single runs in the first and third innings and two more in the fifth to open a 4-0 lead. Spencer Thomas led off the game with a single, moved to second on Trey Rogers' sacrifice bunt and later scored on Jack Morrow's RBI single.  Dom Wyshinski added a two-out run-scoring in the second and David Atwood drove in two runs with a two-out single in the fifth.

The Skyhawks added runs in the fifth and eighth innings to get within two at 4-2 before the Mountain Lions added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Wyshinski contributed a sacrifice fly in the inning.

Adam Moore (2-0) allowed just four hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings as he struck out six. Cody Beck earned his second save as he struck out three in 1 2/3 innings.

The Mountain Lions took a 7-1 lead after the first three innings. Tom Valichka had a two-run single in the first and Wyshinski drove in a run in the second on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Atwood and Rogers had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third after Mike Medori started the third inning with a two-out single.

Young Harris closed out the scoring with a six-run seventh as Tyler Spradlin had a two-run double while Wyshinski drove in two more with his single. Zach Bricknell accounted for the other two runs on his home run – his second of the season – down the right-field line.

Justin Cooper (1-1) earned the win as he allowed one run on four hits and struck out six.
