Mountain Lions roar past Wolves 13-4

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Young Harris College scored 10 runs in the first three innings en route to a 13-4 non-conference baseball victory over the University of West Georgia Wednesday (Feb. 20) afternoon at Cole Field.

The Mountain Lions ran their win streak to six games as they improved to 6-2 while the Wolves fell to 7-4. Young Harris returns to action when they open up its Peach Belt Conference schedule with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 23) against Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

Young Harris batted around in the first inning against West Georgia starter Jonathon Black as they sent 10 batters to the plate. Adam Moore, who went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, drove in the first run with a bases-loaded walk. David Atwood, who went 2-for-6, stroke a two-run single down the left-field line. Zach Bricknell, who went 2-for-4, followed with a two-run single down the right-field line. Mike Medori closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly.

After West Georgia scored three runs in its half of the first, the Mountain Lions, who had a season-high 19 hits in the win, got those three runs back in the second. Moore, Tom Valichka and Dom Wyshinski, who went 3-for-5, each had an RBI hit in the inning.

Trey Rogers, who went 4-for-6, and Jack Morrow, who went 2-for-4, hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the third inning as the Mountain Lions, who saw every starter but one collect a hit, added another run to take a 10-3 lead.

Moore added an RBI double in the fifth and Spencer Thomas, who went 3-for-6, drove in two more with his sixth-inning double to left field as Young Harris took a 13-3 lead.

William Leatherwood (2-0) got the win for the Mountain Lions with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless one-hit relief.
