GREENWOOD, S.C. – Connor Lewis homered and drove in four runs as Lander University rallied for a 5-2 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Feb. 23) evening at Dolny Stadium.
The eighth-ranked Bearcats improved to 10-2 overall and to 4-0 in the conference while the Mountain Lions saw their six-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 6-3 and 0-1. The two teams wrap up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 24).
Trey Rogers singled and Jack Morrow was hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning before David Atwood's two-run single to right field gave Young Harris a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off Lander starter Dylan Wolchick (3-0), who settled down after the first and tossed a complete-game as he struck out 12.
Lander didn't collect a hit until the fourth inning off Mountain Lion starter Justin Cooper (1-2), but the Bearcats cut the margin to 2-1 on Colby Painter's inside-the-park homer to center field.
The Bearcats took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Erik Lunde and Patrick Grady walked, and scored on Lewis's two-out double down the right-field line into the corner. Lander increased its lead to 5-2 in the seventh when Grady walked and Lewis hit a two-run homer to right field.
