YH Softball Splits Doubleheader with Francis Marion

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College Mountain Lions split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon at the YH Softball Complex. The Patriots claimed game one 5-1 before the Mountain Lions responded with a 3-1 victory in game two.

Game One: Francis Marion 5, Young Harris 1

Francis Marion struck quickly in the top of the first inning. Jenna Walling delivered an RBI single before Maddy Golka followed with a three-run home run to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.

Young Harris answered in the bottom of the first when Haley Cummings grounded out to shortstop, allowing Bailee Brown to score on a throwing error by the Francis Marion first baseman.

The Patriots added an insurance run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Mikaela Goss to extend the lead to 5-1.

Bailee Brown paced the Mountain Lions at the plate, going 3-for-4. Shelby Duncan and Shayla Pennington also recorded hits for Young Harris. Jenna Walling earned the win for Francis Marion, tossing a complete game while allowing just one unearned run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Bailee Brown went 3-for-4 and scored the Mountain Lions' lone run.
• Shelby Duncan and Shayla Pennington each recorded a hit.
• Haley Cummings drove in the lone RBI for Young Harris.
• Abbie Burkett threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Game Two: Young Harris 3, Francis Marion 1

The Mountain Lions bounced back in game two with a statement win behind a strong outing from Julia Moore.

Young Harris jumped ahead in the first inning when Gracie Hughes blasted a two-run home run, scoring Haley Cummings to give the Mountain Lions an early 2-0 lead.

Young Harris added another run in the fourth inning when Addie Heal grounded out to second base, allowing Bailey Gossett to score and extend the lead to 3-0.

Francis Marion pushed across a run in the fifth inning when Mikaela Goss scored during a rundown play that resulted in Anderson Thrower being put out at second base.

Moore kept the Patriots in check the rest of the way, tossing a complete game while allowing just four hits and one run while walking five and striking out three.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Julia Moore threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits.
• Gracie Hughes went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
• Jordan Morris finished 2-for-2 at the plate.
• Addie Heal drove in the Mountain Lions' third run.
