GREENWOOD, S.C. | The No. 43 Young Harris College women's tennis team earned a huge 4-3 victory over Lander University on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 11) at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center, marking the Mountain Lions' first win over the Bearcats since 2018.
Young Harris (5-3) set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Futaba Saito and Maud Scholten battled to a 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Tuva Asplund and Callie Stanfield earned a 7-6 win at No. 2. Holly Ashford and Viviana Gomez completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Bearcats responded in singles play by winning the top three courts to take a 3-1 lead. Lander claimed victories at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 singles to put the pressure on the Mountain Lions.
Young Harris answered with wins on the final three courts to secure the comeback victory. Viviana Gomez fought through a three-set battle at No. 4 singles, defeating Thilda Danielsson 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Callie Stanfield followed with a resilient three-set win at No. 5 singles, rallying for a 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory. Lexie Gillespie sealed the match for the Mountain Lions with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
