Mountain Lions Softball Sweeps Shorter for Fourth Straight Victory

ROME, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team extended its winning streak to four games on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 11), sweeping Shorter University in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Alto Park. The Mountain Lions claimed a 4-3 victory in game one before securing a 7-0 shutout in game two.

Young Harris improved to 13-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the sweep.

In the opener, the Mountain Lions struck first when Gracie Hughes doubled down the left field line to score Shelby Duncan in the first inning. Shorter responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take an early lead.

Young Harris chipped away at the deficit as Shayla Pennington delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning to cut the score to 3-2. The Mountain Lions tied the game in the fifth when Hughes lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Bailee Brown.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning when Hughes came through again, singling to shortstop to score Mackenzie Thompson and give Young Harris a 4-3 lead.

Lakely Parrish earned the win in relief, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing just two hits and no runs after entering in the first inning.

In game two, the Mountain Lions controlled the contest from start to finish behind a dominant performance from Julia Moore.

Addie Heal put Young Harris on the board in the second inning with an RBI double to score Gracie Hughes. Heal struck again in the fourth inning, blasting a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0.

Young Harris added another run in the fifth when Haley Cummings drove in Jordan Morris with a sacrifice fly. The Mountain Lions broke the game open in the seventh as Shelby Duncan tripled home Mackenzie Thompson before Gracie Hughes and Mallory Clark each added RBIs to complete the scoring.

Moore was outstanding in the circle, throwing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out nine to earn the win and player of the game honors.
