Young Harris Volleyball Wraps Up Redderson Invitational

GREENWOOD, S.C. | The Mountain Lions traveled to Greenwood, South Carolina, for the Redderson Invitational, facing Lander, Saint Anselm, Winston-Salem State and Chowan over the weekend. Young Harris finished the event 1-3 and moved to 3-5 on the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

Game One: (Lander University)

  • Lander defeated Young Harris in four sets (3-1). Lander took sets 1, 2 and 4 while Young Harris claimed set 3.
  • Key performers for Young Harris: Abby Schirm led the Mountain Lions with 11 kills, 13 digs and 2 aces. Hannah Depp added 9 kills, and Kathryn Urbanek had 7 kills.
  • Linsey Burke ran the offense with 19 assists while Lyza Thigpen added 14 assists. Kellyn French and Schirm paced the defense with 13 digs each (French's 13 noted).
  • Team points (from match sheet): Young Harris 53, Lander 78.

Game Two: (Saint Anselm College)

  • Saint Anselm edged Young Harris in five sets (3-2). Saint Anselm won the first two sets, Young Harris rallied to take sets three and four, and Saint Anselm closed the match in the fifth.
  • YH leaders: Abby Schirm (13 kills), Kathryn Urbanek (12 kills) and Lauren DeSilets (5 kills).
  • Serving was a factor: Lexie Martin recorded 4 aces. Thigpen dished 20 assists, Burke added 14 assists.
  • Back-row work: Lexie Martin led with 21 digs; Thigpen had 9 digs and Burke had 8.
  • Team points: Young Harris 64, Saint Anselm 76.

Game Three: (Winston-Salem State University)

  • Winston-Salem State took the match in four sets (3-1). Young Harris won the opening set, but WSSU rallied to win the final three.
  • Offensive leaders for YH: Abby Schirm (16 kills), Hannah Depp (7 kills) and Lauren DeSilets (6 kills).
  • Serving and distribution: Lexie Martin and Linsey Burke each posted 4 aces. Lyza Thigpen recorded 18 assists, Burke had 14 assists.
  • Defensive highlights: Schirm recorded 15 digs, Depp added 14 digs.
  • Team points: Winston-Salem State 68, Young Harris 60.

Game Four: (Chowan University)

  • Young Harris closed the invitational with a 3-1 victory over Chowan. YH took sets 1, 3 and 4 while Chowan won set 2.
  • Standout performance: Abby Schirm posted a match-high 19 kills and 20 digs.
  • Supporting offense: Lauren DeSilets (5 kills) and Alexa Berry (5 kills). Rylee DeSimone added 5 kills as well.
  • Front-row defense: Kathryn Urbanek and Rylee DeSimone each recorded 3 blocks; Schirm added 2 blocks.
  • Setter/defense numbers: Lyza Thigpen (20 assists) and Linsey Burke (11 assists). Burke and Thigpen also combined for 13 digs apiece (Schirm led with 20 digs).
