Defense, Which Has Told the Story for Most of the Year, Comes Up Big for YH in 80-78 Win

MOUNT OLIVE, NC. | The Mountain Lions finished the second half on a 15-4 run after the under-eight media timeout, and went onto win 80-78 over the Mount Olive Trojans (Feb 15th). Carl Cleveland once again led the way for the Mountain Lions in the victory. In tonight's game, Karl Chavis surpassed Frank Adams (1,573 points) to claim the second spot on Young Harris College's all-time scoring list. Chavis now has 1,579 career points as a Mountain Lion.

The Mountain Lions advance to 17-7 overall and are 12-4 in Conference Carolinas. The Trojans move to 10-15 overall and are 8-9 in Conference Carolinas.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JEREMY CURRIER:

"Great road win for our team. It took a lot of heart, toughness, and togetherness; Our players showed all of those things. Mount Olive is the top scoring team in Conference Carolinas and leads all of NCAA Division II in fast break points. We knew that we needed to get back and get our defense set and the guys did a great job with the game-plan. We really emphasized rebounding the ball and we had so many step up in that area which led to a +15 rebounding margin. Incredibly proud of the fight our team has and excited to finish this regular season off in a great way."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Carl Cleveland once again led the way for the Mountain Lions with 31 points on 11-16 from the field to go along with eight rebounds.

  • Karl Chavis had an efficient day from the field shooting 8-14 which was good for 17 points while also dishing out five assists.

  • It was once again the rebounding battle which told the story for the Mountain Lions victory. Young Harris out rebounded Mount Olive 37-22 and 10-5 on the offensive side.

  • The Mountain Lions turned those 10 offensive rebounds into an impressive 22 second chance points.

  • Young Harris shot an efficient 54% from the field to go along with 81% from the free throw line.

  • When the Trojan's had success today, it was their ability to force the Mountain Lions to turn it over that did it. Mount Olive forced Young Harris into 17 turnovers while only turning it over six times themselves. This led to 18 fast break points for the Trojans.

  • Mount Olive was led by Chase Dawson's 24 points on 8-12 shooting and 4-6 from beyond the arc.

UP NEXT: The Mountain Lions return home this Wednesday (Feb 19th) where they will take on conference foe King University at 7PM. During halftime of this game, Young Harris College will be inducting three individuals into the YH Hall of Fame (Pete Herrmann, Lucero Robayo, and C.J. Wilson)!
