Mountain Lions Taken Down by FMU Patriots, Still Alive in Elimination Bracket

Duncan, SC| The Young Harris College softball team had a quick turnaround after the comeback victory they pulled off on Thursday (Apr. 25) night against the Emmanuel Lions. YHC played Francis Marion at noon on Friday (Apr. 26), and the game did not go in the Mountain Lions direction. The Patriots scored early and often, and the Mountain Lions could not catch back up.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Francis Marion University scored five runs in the first inning, after loading the bases and knocking the ball around the park. Peyton Gale, Katie Smith, and Makayla Cuthbertson picked up RBIs for the Patriots.

  • Addie Heal tried to bring the Mountain Lions back into the game, as she launched a solo home run to right center to get YHC within four runs in the top of the 2nd inning.

  • Both teams went scoreless from the bottom of the second inning into the bottom of the fifth, with YHC having Kylie Ferguson in the circle, and FMU sporting Conference Carolinas softball pitcher of the year Alyssa Poston.

  • The Patriots added two more runs in the fifth inning, off a big fly by Lauren Smallwood and an RBI double by Taylor Watford to take a 7-1 lead.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, up by six runs, FMU needed to score two runs to mercy the Mountain Lions. The Patriots loaded up the bases with nobody out and got RBI singles from Emma Moberg and Cuthbertson to end the game in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Mountain Lions.

  • In the circle, the Mountain Lions used a combination of Ferguson, Grace Young, and Gracie Hughes. The Patriots started pitcher of the year Poston, and she excelled, striking out nine YHC hitters, while giving up just one total run in the FMU 9-1 win.
