Young Harris Completes the Comeback, Prevails in Five Set Thriller

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College Volleyball claimed the thrilling five set victory 3-2 over Shorter on Wednesday night. The Mountain Lions took set one 25-22 before dropping sets two and three. YHC battled back down 2-1 to win set four 25-19 and force the deciding fifth set. Young Harris showed grit in set five and Lily Hidalgo's final swing gave the Purple and White the 15-13 victory and the match.

Young Harris improves to 3-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play. Shorter falls to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in conference action.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Young Harris used a six-point run late in set one to take over and eventually go up 1-0.
  • The second set went into extras, with Shorter winning the set 31-29. The Hawks seized the momentum and cruised to the 25-18 third set victory.
  • The Mountain Lions stood strong and battled to win set four 25-19, forcing the decisive fifth set. Lily Hidalgo and Abby Schirm combined for seven kills in the set.
  • In the fifth set, Shorter's Caroline Sivills slammed one home, giving the Hawks the 7-4 advantage. Chase Vaigneur's service ace highlighted a four-point stretch for the Mountain Lions as they reclaimed the lead, 8-7. A late attack error from Shorter set up match point for Young Harris. Lily Hidalgo received the set from Lyza Thigpen, swung, and nailed it to the hardwood for the victory.
  • Hidalgo, Schirm, and Shelby Mullins led the Mountain Lions offense. Hidalgo had a team-high 13 kills, Schirm contributed 12, and Mullins recorded 11.
  • Joha Bernis had a great night leading the team with 28 digs, tallied six assists and had three key service aces for YHC.
  • Emily Crocker was the main source of offense for Shorter and finished with a match-high 20 kills.
UP NEXT:
Young Harris hits the road for two matches this weekend. The Mountain Lions take on Belmont Abbey College on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then travel to North Greenville for a Saturday match at 2:00 p.m.
