COLUMBUS, Ga. | The Young Harris College softball team ended their season Saturday (April 29) at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Cougar Field.
The Mountain Lions defeated Flagler College 6-3 in their first elimination game of the day before Lander University eliminated YHC 9-8. Young Harris ended its season at 19-31.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
FLAGLER
- Kylie Ferguson (8-15) earned the win with a gem. She allowed just one hit and one run while striking out five in 5.1 innings.
- The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first as Grace Young and Hannah Carey had back-to-back doubles.
- After Flagler tied it at 1 in the third, the Mountain Lions scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings.Â
- Young stroked a two-run homer to left field in the fifth. It was her seventh of the season.Â
- Erin Chambliss led off the sixth inning with a homer to center field. It was her second of 2023. Carey added a RBI single, while Gracie Hughes drove in another with a single up the middle.
- The Mountain Lions posted 11 hits. Carey led the way with three, while Young and Hughes collected two apiece.
LANDER
- Lander scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Logan Coward's single to right field as they took advantage of two YHC errors.
- Lander had jumped out to a 5-1 through the first two innings before Young Harris responded with five runs in the top of the third to reclaim a 6-5 lead. Young started the scoring with a two-run homer to center. It was her eighth of the campaign. Hannah Rizzuto added a three-run homer - her seventh of the year - to left-center.
- The Bearcats scored three runs in the bottom of the third to open up an 8-6 lead, but the Mountain Lions tied the game at 8 with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Carey added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, while Hughed drove in a run in the sixth on a two-out single to center field.
- Ferguson (8-16) took the loss in relief. She allowed just three hits and one unearned run in 4.1 innings.
- The Mountain Lions had 11 hits against the Bearcats. Young tallied three of them, while Hughes and Shelby Duncan had two each.Â
