Georgia College rallies past Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Georgia College & State University took a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (March 11) afternoon at the YHC Softball Field.

The Bobcats, who rallied in each game, won the opener 13-10 and followed that up with a 7-6 win in the nightcap. GCSU improved to 17-7 overall and to 5-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 11-16 and 3-6. YHC steps out of conference play Wednesday (March 15) as they host the University of West Georgia in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

GAME 1
  • YHC jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Gracie Hughes had an RBI single before Hannah Rizzuto hit a grand slam off the light standard in left field. It was her fourth homer of the season.
  • Rizzuto and Bailee Brown each drove in a run with a single in the third to give YHC an 8-4 lead.
  • Georgia College rallied for nine runs in the fourth as they opened up a 13-8 lead.
  • Aubrey Bourrie tripled home a run in the fifth and Amber Divine led off the seventh with a homer to center field. It was Divine's first long ball of the campaign.
  • Young Harris collected 14 hits as Brown, Hughes, Rizzuto and Erin Chambliss each had two hits.
  • Kaliyah Smith (1-2) took the loss in relief. 
GAME 2
  • The Mountain Lions took a 4-0 lead after the opening frame. Bourrie accounted for the first run on an RBI single before Grace Young connected on a three-run homer to left-center field. It was her fourth homer of the season.
  • Hughes added a home run off the fair pole down the left field line in the third before Hannah Carey homered to left in the seventh. It was Carey's team leading ninth homer, while it was the fourth for Hughes.
  • The Mountain Lions had seven hits in the nightcap with Bourrie and Hughes each collecting two hits each.
  • Jill Dixon (2-3) took the loss in relief.
