Johnson helps overcome big deficit as Mountain Lions rally for 68-56 win over Clayton State

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Mackenzie Johnson scored 21 of her game-high 26 points in the second half as Young Harris College overcame a 25-point deficit to pick up a 68-56 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Clayton State University Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center.

The Mountain Lions level their overall record at 10-10 and 6-6 inside the Peach Belt, while the Lakers fell to 11-10 and 6-6. YHC closes out their three-game homestand Wednesday (Feb. 8) with a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest against Columbus State University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Clayton State opened up its largest lead of the game - 25 points (42-17) - after Jada Francois Lubin's jumper with 2:39 remaining in the second quarter. The Lakers led 42-18 at the half.
  • The Mountain Lions roared back in the second half, outscoring Clayton State 50-14 over the final 20 minutes.
  • Young Harris scored the first 15 points of the third quarter to cut the lead down to nine points (42-33) on a driving layup by Kalen Surles with 3:53 to go.
  • The Mountain Lions used a 12-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull even at 53 on a Johnson hook shot with 5:12 remaining in the game.
  • YHC took its first lead of the game at 55-53 after Johnson sank two free throws 26 seconds later.
  • The closest Clayton State would get the rest of the game was two points (57-55).
  • The final score was the largest lead of the game for the Mountain Lions.
  • Young Harris shot 59.3 percent from the floor (16-of-27) in the second half, while the Lakers were limited to 18.5 percent (5-of-27).
  • Johnson, who was 10-of-16 from the floor, recorded another double double as she grabbed 16 rebounds. It was her 15th double double of the season. 
  • Dustie Obah added 12 points and five assists, while Carly Winters added 11 points and six rebounds.
  • YHC outrebounded Clayton State 42-33.
