Mountain Lions tame Bearcats 71-60

GREENWOOD, S.C. | The Young Harris College used a strong third quarter as the Mountain Lions defeated Lander University 71-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 22) evening at Finis Horne Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 12-13 overall and to 8-9 in the Peach Belt, while the Bearcats fell to 7-19 and 4-13. YHC closes out the regular season Saturday (Feb. 25) as they host No. 19 Georgia Southwestern State University in a 1:30 p.m. PBC game at the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center. The Mountain Lions will recognize their two seniors - Mackenzie Johnson and Kalen Surles - following the contest.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Mountain Lions used a 15-6 run to start the second quarter to take a nine-point lead (28-19) after a Dustie Obah three-pointer with 2:54 remaining.
  • YHC, which led 32-23 at the half, exploded in the third quarter as they outscored Lander 29-14. Young Harris shot a sizzling 65.0 percent (13-of-20) from the field in the the quarter.
  • Young Harris started the third quarter on a 14-6 run as the Mountain Lions opened up a 17-point lead (46-29) after a Johnson old-fashioned three-point play with 5:14 to go.
  • The Mountain Lions kept extending their lead until they took a 26-point lead (63-37) after Trinity Edwards hit two free throws 35 seconds into the fourth quarter.
  • Johnson, who was 10-of-16 from the field, recorded another double double with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Johnson is now 50 points away from becoming the third 1,000-pointer scorer in program history.
  • Obah scored 13 points as she sank three three-pointers.
  • Edwards finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Carly Winters added eight points, while Surles posted six rebounds and four assists.
  • YHC outrebounded Lander 44-24, including a 16-8 margin on the offensive glass. 
  • The Mountain Lions finished the game hitting 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the floor.
  • It was the first back-to-back wins against Lander since the Mountain Lions won back-to-back games against the Bearcats in 2013 and 2014.
