Mountain Lions split games on opening day of Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Young Harris College softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Charger Chillout Friday (Feb. 10) afternoon at Sand Mountain Park.

The Mountain Lions improved to 4-3 after they defeated Delta State University 11-5 in the opener before falling to Trevecca Nazarene University 9-2. YHC will face No. 20 Lincoln Memorial University at 11:30 a.m. Central time Saturday (Feb. 11).

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES:

DELTA STATE
  • After Delta State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Mountain Lions got a run back on Gracie Hughes' RBI double to left-center field in the bottom half.
  • YHC took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the second. Grace Young started the scoring with a two-run double, while Hannah Carey and Trinity Aycock each drove in a run. Carey had a single, while Aycock drew a bases-loaded walk.
  • Carey had an RBI single to center, while Shea Bayreuther walked with the bases loaded in the fourth as YHC opened up a 7-2 lead.
  • Carey added a bases-clearing double to right-center field to give the Mountain Lions a 10-2 lead in the fifth.
  • The Mountain Lions scored their final run in the seventh on Hughes' single to center.
  • Young (1-0) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief.
  • Carey led the way with four hits and five RBI, while Young and Hughes each collected three hits and two RBI.
TREVECCA NAZARENE
  • The Mountain Lions only collected three hits against the Trojans. Young had a double, while Hughes and Hannah Rizzuto had singles.
  • Hughes' RBI single to right in the first inning scored Aubrey Bourrie, who led the game with a walk.
  • Aycock drove in the other run for YHC after she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
  • Kylie Ferguson (1-2) absorbed the loss in the circle.
