Clayton State holds on for 69-66 victory over YHC

MORROW, Ga. | Audrey McElhaney scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half as Clayton State University rallied and then held on for a 69-66 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Jan. 4) evening at the Loch.

The Lakers improved to 6-5 overall and to 1-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 5-6 and 1-2. YHC returns to the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center for a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest against Augusta University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The game was a game of swings. Clayton State jumped out to a 16-point lead (20-4) with 3:41 left in the first quarter, before YHC fought back and took an eight-point advantage (49-41) after a Kalen Surles jumper with 9:38 left in the fourth quarter.
  • The Mountain Lions battled back over the final 6:11 span of the second quarter as they put together a 16-0 run to open up a 32-31 lead at the half. JaMari Frederick scored the first eight points on the run as she sanked back-to-back three-pointers and added two free throws.
  • After YHC opened up its eight-point lead, the Lakers reclaimed the lead at 57-56 on Jadah Waite three-pointer with 4:27 left.
  • Clayton State extended its lead to seven points (67-60) after McElhaney hit one of two free throws with 28 seconds to play. An old-fashioned three-point play from Mackenzie Johnson and a three-pointer from Dustie Obah pulled the Mountain Lions within two points (68-66) with eight seconds left, but that would be as close as they would get.
  • Young Harris outrebounded Clayton State 44-35, but the Lakers scored 17 points off 24 YHC turnovers.
  • Johnson recorded her ninth double double of the season with 24 points and 17 rebounds.
  • Frederick also finished in double figures with 14 points, while Surles also grabbed eight rebounds.
