AMERICUS, Ga. | Jolicia Williams scored 20 points to lead No. 12 Georgia Southwestern State University past Young Harris College 76-52 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 28) evening at the Storm Dorm.
The Hurricanes improved to 17-2 overall and to 9-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-10 and 4-6. Young Harris returns to the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center Wednesday (Feb. 1) when they host Lander University in a 5:30 p.m. league contest.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Georgia Southwestern used an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter to open up a 22-9 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
- The Hurricanes extended their lead to 48-23 at the half as GSW shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field in the second quarter.
- Mackenzie Johnson led the Mountain Lions with her 13th double double of the season - sixth best in NCAA Division II - as she scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.
- With her 19 points, Johnson moves past Niaya White to number five on the all-time YHC scoring list with 826 points. Johnson trails Peyton Robertson, who is No. 4 on the list by 20 points.
- Johnson now has 687 career rebounds and now trails YHC Athletics Hall of Famer Ladondra Johnson by 61 for No. 1 on the list.
- JaMari Frederick also scored in double figures with 14 points, while Trinity Edwards added eight more.
- YHC held a 48-43 margin on the glass, but Georgia Southwestern outscored the Mountain Lions 36-28 in the paint.
