GREENWOOD, S.C. | Morgan Curley drove in the go-ahead YHC runs in the eighth to give the Young Harris College softball team a 5-3 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander University, Friday (April 22) evening in game one of the series at Doug Spears Field.
Young Harris improved to 22-16 overall, and 13-9 in the Peach Belt, while Lander fell to 31-12 and 12-7. The Mountain Lions and the Bearcats return to action Saturday (April 23) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Kylie Ferguson (9-5) earned the win for YHC. In seven innings pitched, Ferguson struck out three batters and recorded no walks.
- Lander University scored its first run of the game in the first off a single to center field.
- Ashley Autuori homered to left field -her seventh of the season- and recorded two RBI to give YHC a 2-1 advantage in the third.
- Erin Chambliss added another RBI in the third off a hit by a pitch with bases loaded and gave the Mountain Lions a two-run lead at 3-1.
- Lander added two runs in the sixth to tie the game up at 3.
- Chambliss led off the eighth with a single up the middle, and advanced to third off an error on a fielder's choice on a Jillian Vitamanti slap.
- Curley drove Chambliss and Vitamanti in off a single to right to give the Mountain Lions its final runs of the night in the eighth.
- Sam Davis earned the save – her third of the season - for YHC, Davis struck out two and only gave up one hit.
- YHC totaled six hits. Trinity Aycock led with two, while Curley, Autuori, Amber Divine, and Chambliss had one hit apiece.
