YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College nearly rallied from 21 points down against Augusta University, but fell to the Jaguars 66-61 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 12) afternoon at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.
The Jaguars improved to 11-11 overall and to 5-9 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 12-12 and 4-11. Young Harris returns to action against its Blood Mountain rivals University of North Georgia Wednesday (Feb. 16) at 5:30 p.m. in Dahlonega, Georgia.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Mackenzie Johnson led the Mountain Lions with another double double - 17 points and 13 rebounds.
- Carly Winters and Carissa Spiker each contributed 11 points apiece.
- Niaya White grabbed seven rebounds while Kalen Surles had six as YHC had a 43-40 edge in rebounding.
- Surles gave Young Harris a 21-20 lead on a layup after a Jaguar turnover with 8:58 left in the second quarter, but Augusta scored 13 unanswered points to open up a 33-21 lead on an Autumn Phillips jumper with 3:14 remaining in the half.
- Augusta opened up its largest lead - 21 points (52-31) - after Kennedi Manning basket with 3:20 left in the third quarter.
- YHC got the deficit back to single digits - nine points (55-46) after White's jumper with 5:23 left in the game, but could get no closer than five points the rest of the way.
