Chavis leads No. 18 Mountain Lions past UVA Wise 72-67

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Karl Chavis scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Young Harris College recorded a 72-67 men's basketball victory over the University of Wise's College at Wise Saturday (Dec. 31) afternoon at the Harp Recreation and Commencement Center.

The 18th-ranked Mountain Lions improved to 11-0, while the Cavaliers fell to 7-5. Young Harris returns to Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday (Jan. 4) when they travel to Morrow, Georgia, for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Clayton State University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Chavis, who scored 18 points in the second half, hit nine of 11 field goals and went 6-of-9 from the free throw line.
  • Nate Dunlop added 16 points as he connected on three three-pointers. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
  • The Mountain Lions shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) of their shots in the second half.
  • YHC started the game on an 8-0 run after Paul Hosey hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 18:11 to play.
  • UVA Wise took its first lead at 20-18 on a Calen Lightford three-pointer with 8:30 left in the half, before Young Harris took a 33-30 lead at the half.
  • After the Cavaliers hit their opening bucket of the second half, the Mountain Lions scored nine unanswered points to take their largest lead of the game - 10 points (42-32) - after a Josh Petteno three-pointer with 16:41 to play.
  • UVA Wise battled back to take its biggest lead - three points (50-47) - after a Bradley Dean jumper with 11:32 remaining.
  • YHC put together a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead for good after Cameron Bleshoy hit a three-pointer from the right side to take 64-55 lead with 5:11 to go.
  • The Cavaliers trimmed the deficit down to one point (68-67) with 49 seconds left, but Chavis' driving lauyup on the next YHC possession thwarted the Cavalier comeback. Chavis also added two free throws down the stretch for added insurance.
  • Lenny Pradia added nine points and dished out five assists, while Petteno added seven points and four assists.
  • YHC outscored UVA Wise 28-22 in the paint and 13-8 in second-chance points.
