Johnson, Hill lead Young Harris past Clayton State 70-62 in overtime

Johnson scored career-high 23 points, while Hill set a career high with 17

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Mackenzie Johnson and Andelin Hill combined for 40 points and 24 rebounds as the Young Harris College women's basketball perserved in a 70-62 overtime victory over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference game Wednesday (Jan. 5) at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Mountain Lions, who recorded their second-ever win against Clayton State in 19 tries, improved to 9-3 overall and to 1-2 in the league, while the Lakers fell to 6-3 and 0-1. Young Harris travels to Augusta, Georgia, Saturday (Jan. 8) for a 1:30 p.m. PBC game against Augusta University.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Audrey McElhaney, who led the Lakers with 33 points and 14 rebounds, sent the game into overtime at 57 with her layup with four seconds left in regulation.
  • Kalen Surles gave the Mountain Lions a 59-57 lead on a layup off a Clayton State layup with 4:41 left in overtime, before the Lakers reclaimed a 60-59 lead on a Devyne Turner three-pointer on their next possession.
  • Johnson, who scored a career-high 23 points, gave YHC the lead for good at 61-60 on a layup off a Hill pass with 4:03 remaining. That started an 11-0 run for the Mountain Lions, who were 5-for-5 from the floor in the extra period.
  • Hill, who was making her first career start for Young Harris, responded with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. The second-year freshman went 7-of-11 from the floor and sank 3-of-4 from long distance. She also dished out five assists.J
  • Johnson was 11-of-17 from the field to go along with 12 rebounds.
  • Carly Winters finished with 10 points for the Mountain Lions, while Niaya White added eight.
  • Surles set a career high with 12 assists to go along with four points, six rebounds and four steals.
  • All five players for Clayton State played the entire game for the Lakers.
