AMERICUS, Ga. | Georgia Southwestern State University held off a furious Young Harris College rally to record a 68-63 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory Monday (Jan. 24) evening at the Storm Dome.
The Hurricanes improved to 14-3 overall and to 6-2 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 11-7 and 3-6. YHC hosts its Blood Mountain rival University of North Georgia Georgia Wednesday (Jan. 26) evening inside the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center. The game against the No. 9-ranked Nighthawks is the annual Purple Out.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Georgia Southwestern took its largest lead - 10 points (47-37) - after a Daelyn Craig free throw with 2:18 left in the third quarter.
- Young Harris used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50 after Mackenzie Johnson hit a layup with 8:47 remaining in the final quarter.
- The Mountain Lions took a 63-62 lead with 3:16 left after an old-fashioned three-point play from Niaya White with 3:16 to go. It would be the final points for YHC.
- The Hurricanes took the lead for good on their next possession as Jolicia Williams hit a three-pointer to give GSW a 65-63 advantage.
- Johnson led the Mountain Lions with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while White scored 18 and grabbed nine rebounds.
- Carly Winters also finished in double figure for YHC as she had 14 points as she sank four three-pointers.
- Kalen Surles also contributed seven rebounds and dished out five assists for the Mountain Lions.
- YHC held a 42-36 edge in rebounding, while the Mountain Lions were guilty of committing a season-high 29 turnovers.
