BRISTOL, Tenn. | Young Harris College opened up play Friday (Sept. 10) at the King (Tenn.) Invitational at the Student Center Comnplex.
The Mountain Lions dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Emory & Henry College 3-2 by scores of 24-26, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, and 15-5 in the nightcap after falling to Mars Hill University 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, and 25-12). in their earlier match.
The Mountain Lions remained winless in six attempts. Young Harris will face Lees-McRae College at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 11) before facing tournament host King (Tenn.) University at 5 p.m. to wrap up the final day of the tournament.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
vs. Emory & Henry
- For the first time in program history the match went the distance - five sets. The match lasted two hours and seven minutes, the longest ever for the Mountain LIons
- Young Harris had taken a 2-1 lead after winning set three 25-22, but the Wasps stung the Mountain Lions by winning the final two sets.
- Alex Pierre and Lily Hidalgo each led YHC with 11 kills, while Pierre had a .348 hitting percentage (only three errors in 23 swings). Chase Vaigneur added eight kills, while Shelby Mullins tallied seven.
- Ginger Truncale (24) and Annie Messler (17) combined for 41 assists.
- Joha Bernis led the Mountain Lions with 16 digs and four service aces.
- Vaigneur (13) and Truncale (11) also posted double-figure dig totals.
vs Mars Hill
- Mullins led YHC with eight kills, while Jessica Beckner and Vaigneur had four apiece.
- Messler led the Mountain Lions with 10 assists, while Alex Boydstone contributed six and Truncale added four.
- Bernis tallied a career-high 20 digs.
