Young Harris, No. 24 Columbus State split doubleheader

Mountain Lions win program-best 17th Peach Belt victory

COLUMBUS, Ga. | Young Harris College and No. 24-ranked Columbus State University split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday (April 25) afternoon at Ragsdale Field at Burger King Stadium.

The Cougars rallied for a 9-6 victory in game one before the Mountain Lions won 10-5 in the nightcap.

The Mountain Lions improved to 19-15 overall and to 17-12 in the Peach Belt. The 17 PBC wins in a season is the most for Young Harris, which won 16 PBC games in 2019 en route to winning a PBC Tournament and earning its first-ever NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • Young Harris jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third.
  • T.J. Byrd drove in the second inning run on a bases-loaded walk and Jackson Jones added a two-run homer to right field an inning later. It was Jones'  seventh long ball of the season.
  • After Columbus State took a 5-3 lead in the sixth, the Mountain Lions regained the lead at 6-5 after a three-run seventh inning. Tucker Greer stroked his 18th homer of the season - a three-run shot to right-center field.
  • The Cougars rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead at 9-5.
  • Brody Meeks (1-2) suffered the loss in relief.
  • Noah Fitzgerald and Greer led the 10-hit Mountain Lion attack with three hits each. Greer and Fitzgerald each had a double.

Game 2
  • The Mountain Lions had 16 hts in the nightcap as every starter had at least one hit. Greer and Dahlton Cash each had three hits apiece, while Byrd, Fitzgerald and Hawkins had two hits each.
  • YHC took a 2-0 lead in the third as Cash and Fitzgerald had RBI singles.
  • The Mountain Lions scored five times in the fifth as they opened up a 7-3 lead.  Byrd had an RBI single before Greer drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Cash drove in another run on an infield single while Jones added an RBI double to left. Fitzgerald drove in a run on a ground out.
  • Young Harris added two more runs in the sixth on run scoring singles from Greer and Cash.
  • The Mountain Lions added a run in the seventh on a homer from Rome Wallace to left-center field. It was Wallace's sixth homer of the year.
  • Reliever McLain Harris (5-2) earned the win with five innings of work and four strikeouts.
