No. 24 UNG takes two from Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | No. 24 University of North Georgia swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Young Harris College Sunday (April 11) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Nighthawks improved to 23-9 overall and to 21-8 in the Peach Belt after rallying for an 11-8 win in the opener and a 12-7 decision in the nightcap. The Mountain Lions saw their 13-game PBC victory streak snapped as they fell to 18-9 and 16-7.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

Game 1
  • Young Harris jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings.
  • T.J. Byrd's grand slam to right-center highlighted a five-run second inning. It was his second homer of the season. Dahlton Cash started the inning with a leadoff home run to left field. It was his third homer of the year.
  • Tyler Greer led off with his 13th long ball of the year to left field. Brett Hawkins followed with a two-run double down the left field line to give YHC an 8-0 lead.
  • North Georgia rallied to tie the game at 8 in the sixth inning as Crew Taylor connected on a three-run homer to right field.
  • The Nighthawks won the game with a three-run ninth. Brady Eeles hit a two-run homer to right and Will Hardigree added a run-scoring hit.
  • Brody Meeks (1-1) suffered the loss in relief.
  • Jackson Jones led YHC with three hits, while Hawkins had two.

Game 2
  • North Georgia jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Logan Worley got a run back on his solo homer to left field in the bottom of the third. It was his second home run of 2021.
  • The Nighthawks added three runs in the top of the third before Young Harris scored a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to get within 7-4. Byrd had an RBI double down the left field line in the fifth and Rome Wallace stroked a two-run homer to left. It was Wallace's fourth homer of the season.
  • UNG added three more in the seventh before YHC rallied for two runs in the bottom half on Kyle Ayers' homer to left. It was the third homer of the year for Ayers.
  • Byrd added a run-scoring single in the eighth inning.
  • Starter Mark Castle (2-1) took the loss.
  • Wallace and Bryd led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.
