Mountain Lions open Gulf South with 23-10 win over Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. | Taylor Greenberg and Anna Luckie combined for 10 goals as the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 23-10 win over Lander University Saturday (March 27) afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 4-4 overall and to 1-0 in the Gulf South, while the Bearcats, who were playing in their first ever GSC contest, fell to 3-3 and 0-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • After Lander took a 1-0 lead, the Mountain Lions took control of the match as they scored next six goals to open up a 6-1 as Greenberg scored with 11:40 left in the first half.
  • The Bearcats got within three goals at 10-7 in the early moments of the second half, but Young Harris thwarted the rally as they scored the next seven goals to exapnd its lead to 17-7 with 17:14 to play after a Kinsley Purser strike. 
  • YHC outshot Lander 47-29, while the Mountain Lions also led 31-22 in ground balls and 23-12 in draw controls.
  • Greenberg led YHC with six goals, while Luckie deposited four in the back of the net. Ella Hancock had three goals, while Leigh Anne Turner, Aubrie Valvo and Purser had two each. Ruthie Mandell, Belle Hardwick, Sierra Haas and MacKenzie Kane had one apiece.
  • Luckie registered three assists, while Hancock, Mandell and Turner had two each. Ansley Coles, Emily Flynt, Greenberg, Belle Hardwick, Felisse Richard and Valvo each had one.
  • Hancock led Young Harris with nine draw controls, while Valvo collected eight.
  • Turner scooped up four ground balls, while Luckie, Kelsey Dover, Sara Beckwith and Hancock had three apiece.
  • Turner, Dover and Hancock each tallied two caused turnovers.
  • Maddy Meyers (9) and Rachel Robb (1) combined for 10 saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
