Second half outburst propels Lander past Young Harris 84-74

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Lander University used a 23-8 run to start the second half to turn a close game at the half into an 84-74 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory oevr Young Harris College Monday (Feb. 8) evening at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Bearcats improved to 5-5 overall and to 3-3 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-5 and 4-4.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The first half was a tightly contested as neither team led by more than five points in the opening 20 minutes. There were 13 lead changes and six ties in the first half.
  • Lander took a 38-37 lead at the half as DaJuan Moorer dunked with two seconds remaining.
  • The Bearcats used a 23-8 run in the first 9:11 of the second half to open up a 61-45 lead after Deon Berrien hit a three-pointer. During the run, the Mountain Lions were 2-of-18 shooting from the floor.
  • The closest the Mountain Lions would get the rest of the way would be seven points (78-71) after Brian Free nailed a three-pointer with 43 seconds left in the game.
  • Lander shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field in the second half, including 7-of-9 from long distance, while Young Harris shot 32.4 percent (11-of-34).
  • The Bearcats held a 44-32 edge in rebounding.
  • Young Harris scored 25 points on 21 Lander turnovers.
  • Alphonso Willis led Young Harris with 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting.
  • Free scored a career-high 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-12 from three-point range.
  • Chinecherem Anukaenyi led YHC with seven rebounds, while Archie had six.
  • Zane Rankin led Lander with 24 points.
