Mountain Lions lead wire-to-wire in 81-72 win over Jaguars

YHC shoots 56.9 percent from the floor

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Alphonso Willis scored 28 points as the Young Harris College men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 81-72 Peach Belt Conference victory over Augusta University Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Mountain Lions improved to 4-4 overall and to 4-3 in the Peach Belt, while the Jaguars fell to 6-4 and 4-4.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Karl Chavis opened the game with a layup and Willis added a jumper after an Augusta turnover to give YHC a 4-0 lead in the opening minute and never trailed in the game.
  • Young Harris used an 11-3 run to open up its first double-digit lead - 11 points (37-26) after a three-pointer by Willis with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions led 44-36 at intermission.
  • YHC took its largest lead - 13 points (61-48) - after Jacorie Archie nailed a three-pointer with 13:39 remaining.
  • Augusta pulled to within three points (65-62) with 8:05 to play, but the Mountain Lions used an 8-2 run to open up an eight-point lead (72-64) after a Willis layup with 3:27 left.
  • Willis shot 12-of-19 from the field and was a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance to go along with his seven rebounds.
  • Brian Free, who was 5-of-8 from the floor, added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Mountain Lions, while Chavis, who was 6-of-9 shooting, finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Archie contributed 12 points.
  • Tyree Myers led Augusta with 20 points, while Tyshaun Crawford and Shawn Moss each added 13.
  • For the second consecutive game, the Mountain Lions shot over 50 percent from the field. YHC hit 56.9 percent (29-of-51) from the field, including 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range.
  • The Mountain Lions held a 33-28 lead in rebounds.
