Willis helps Mountain Lions claw Cougars 93-69

Wllis led Young Harris with 31 points

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Alphonso Willis led three Young Harris College men's basketball players in double figures with 31 points as the Mountain Lions downed Columbus State University 93-69 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Wednesday (Feb. 3) evening in the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Mountain Lions, who haven't played in 10 days, improved to 3-4 overall and to 3-3 in the Peach Belt, while the Cougars fell to 4-5 and 4-5.

  • Columbus State took an early 4-2 lead, but Young Harris used a 14-2 run over a six-minute stretch to open up a 16-6 lead after Jacorie Archie sank a three-pointer at the 12:06 mark. Willis accounted for eight points during the decisive run.
  • The Cougars got as close as nine points (20-11, but the Mountain Lions again put together a 24-7 spurt to open up a 44-18 lead after Archie dropped another three with 3:04 left before halftime. Carl Cleveland had eight points during the run, while Archie and Sebby Jean and six.
  • Young Harris, which led 50-27 at the half, took its largest lead - 31 points (76-45) - after Wiils' layup with 7:47 left. The Mountain Lions led for 36 minutes and 20 seconds.
  • The 31 points for Willis on 13-of-24 shooting from the floor was two off his career high of 33 scored against Lander University on Dec. 13, 2018. Willis dropped 20 points in the first half. Willis added six rebounds and four assists.
  • Archie, who went 6-of-10 from the field, including four three-pointers, scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  •  Cleveland set a career high with 16 points as he was 6-of-8 from the field and was 4-of-5 from long distance. Eleven of his points came in the opening 20 minutes. Cleveland also dished out four assists.
  • Jean tallied nine points, five rebounds and five assists, while Brian Free had seven points and five assists. 
  • Chavis led YHC with nine rebounds and added six points and two blocks.
  • Young Harris' 58.3 percent (35-of-60) shooting from the floor was a season best and the first time they shot above 50 percent this year. The 52,6 percent (10-of-19) from long distance was also a new season high. The Mountain Lions also dished out a season-high 22 assists.
