FLORENCE, S.C. | Young Harris College and Francis Marion University split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 27) afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.
The Mountain Lions won the opener 17-7 in eight innings, while the Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win the nightcap 10-9.
Young Harris improved to 3-3 overall and to 3-2 in the Peach Belt, while Francis Marion fell to 2-4 and 1-4.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
Game 1
- Reigning NCBWA Division II National Hitter of the Week Tucker Greer went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. Greer homered - his fifth of the year - to right field in the third inning and had a run-scoring single in the fourth. He drove in two more with a double in a six-run fifth inning and drove in a run an inning later after being hit by a pitch.Â
- Jackson Jones went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs. Jones had a two-run homer in the third and knocked in two more with a single up the middle in the sixth.
- Kyle Ayers had two hits, including a two-run long ball in the seventh.
- Noah Fitzgerald drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single through the right side,
- Chad Brown (1-0) earned the win as he struck out four in six innings.
- Reliever Ryan Inches struck out three in 1.2 innings.
Game 2
- Greer had three hits in the nightcap and all went for extra bases. He had two doubles, including a run-scoring double double the right field line in the fourth. He added a triple to right field in the eighth.
- Brett Hawkins also collected three hits and drove in three runs. Hawkins had a two-run double down the right field line in the fifth and had a run-scoring single in the ninth that put the Mountain Lions up 9-8.
- John Miller. Logan Worley and Fitzgerald also had two hits. Fitzgerald added a RBI-double down the right field line in the third, while Worley droive in a run in the fifth inning on a single.
- Jack Hegan's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth won the game for the Patriots.
- McLain Harris (1-2) took the loss in relief. Harris had five strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
