Tusculum outlasts Mountain Lions 16-10 in 11 innings

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Tusculum University scored 10 unearned runs in the 11th inning as the Pioneers outlasted Young Harris College 16-10 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday (Feb. 23) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.

The Pioneers improved to 3-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 2-2.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • All 16 runs scored by the Pioneers were unearned.
  • YHC took a 1-0 lead in the first as Tucker Greer and Noah Fitzgerald led off with back-to-back doubles.
  • Tusculum took a 4-1 lead in the third  after Luis Ezra connected on a grand slam to right.
  • The Mountain Lions pulled with a run at 4-3 after single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Greer had an RBI double in the fifth, while John Miller stroked an RBI double in the seventh.
  • After Tusculum scored two runs in the top of the ninth to open a 6-3 lead, the Mountain Lions scored three times in the bottom half to tie the game at 6 and send it into extras. Pinch hitter Mark Castle drew and walk before Miller smacked a two-run homer to left field. Greer followed with a solo home run to left field.
  • Ethan Underwood led off the 10th inning for YHC with a double, but was left stranded.
  • Tusculum then exploded for 10 unearned runs in thr 11th as the Pioneers took advantage of Young Harris' fifth error in the game,
  • YHC pushed across four runs in the bottom of the 11th.  Keith Lyle and Kyle Ayers had sacrifice flies for the Mountain Lions, while Underwood drove in a run with single.
  • McLain Harris (0-1) absorbed the loss.
  • Greer led the Mountain Lions with three hits, while Fitzgerald, Underwood and Miller added two each as YHC collected 13 hits.
  • The teams combined to strand 25 runners (Tusculum 15, Young Harris 10).
