Balanced attack leads Young Harris past West Alabama

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Dashaun Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Young Harris College defeated the University of West Alabama 67-55 in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday (Dec. 13) morning on Education Day at the YHC Recreation and FItness Center.

The Mountain Lions avenged their lone loss of the year as they improved to 8-1, while the Tigers fell to 7-3. Young Harris opens up Peach Belt Conference play Wednesday (Dec. 15) at 1 p.m. as they travel to Milledgeville, Georgia, to face Georgia College.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Young Harris welcomed students from Hayesville and Ranger middle schools to the game.
  • After West Alabama jumped out to a 23-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes, the Mountain Lions took control of the game in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Tigers 41-17.
  • The Mountain Lions got as close as a point (28-27) with 62 seconds left in the first half before scoring 18 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the third quarter to take a 47-35 lead on three Carly Winters free throws with three minutes left.
  • Young Harris took its largest lead - 18 points (63-45) - after a Niaya White jumper with 5:59 left in the game.
  • The Mountain Lions shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) in the third quarter.
  • Young Harris outrebounded West Alabama 40-33 and held a 13-2 advantage in second-chance points.
  • White finished with 13 points, while Winters added 12 more.
  • Mackenzie Johnson and Kalen Surles each tallied 11 points. Johnson also grabbed eight rebounds, while Surles added seven. Surles also recorded four assists and four steals.
