Mountain Lions rally for 62-56 victory over Lees-McRae

Mackenzie Johnson establishes single-game rebound record with 24

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The Young Harris College women's basketball team defeated Lees-McRae College 62-56 Saturday (Nov. 13) afternoon at the UNG Convocation Center. 
 
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0 while the Bobcats fell to 0-2. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 17) in Tigerville, South Carolina, with a 5:30 p.m. game against North Greenville University
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: 
  • Mackenzie Johnson led the Mountain Lions with 16 points. 
  • Johnson, who had 24 rebounds (16 defensive and eight offensive), set a new single-game record in that category. She surpassed the 23 grabbed by Pamela Diokpara in a game against Georgia Southwestern State University in February 2019.
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions outrebounded the Bobcats 56-35, including a 19-11 margin on the offensive glass.
  • YHC trailed 27-24 at the half, but outscored Lees-McRae 21-14 in the third quarter to open a 45-41 lead. 
  • The Bobcats scored the first four points of the fourth period to tie the game at 45, but back-to-back triples by Carly Winters and Kalen Surles pushed the Mountain Lions out to a six-point lead (51-45).
  • Surles and Niaya White each had 13 points.
  • Carissa Spiker distributed five assists and had two steals. 
  • Winters sunk three three-pointers, and Spiker had two. 
  • The Mountain Lions were 11-of-21 at the free throw line.
