Young Harris races past Pacers 78-60 behind three ball, fast start

Mountain Lions connected on 13 three-pointers, one off the school record

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Carly Winters scored a career high 24 points as the three ball and a fast start propelled Young Harris College past the University of South Carolina-Aiken 78-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball ganme Wednesday (Jan. 20) evening at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-0 overall and to 2-0 in the Peach Belt, while the Pacers fell to 0-4 and 0-3.

USC Aiken took a 2-0 lead 17 seconds into the game, but the Mountain Lions took control of the game as they went on a 27-3 run to take a 27-5 lead on a Kalen Surles putback with 1:23 left in the first quarter. YHC connected on four three-pointers during the run as Lindsey Caudell hit two and Niaya White and Winters hit one apiece. While the Mountain Lions were nearly unstoppable from the field (11-of-17, 64.7 percent) in the opening 10 minutes, the Pacers were not as they only hit one of 16 shots (6.3 percent).

The Mountain Lions kept their foot on the gas pedal as they built their lead to as many as 27 points (40-13) after Winters hit another three pointer with six minutes remaining before the half.

Young Harris led 48-27 at intermission and took its largest lead 29 points (59-30) as Winters, who went 6-of-7 from long distance, sank another three-pointer with 6:40 left in the third quarter.

The Mountain Lions set a new team record for three-point shooting as they finished hitting 54.2 percent of their shots. The 13 three-pointers was one off the school record of 14 set in 2018 against Columbus State University. Caudell also went 5-of-9 from long distance as she finished with 15 points.

White added 16 points for YHC, while Samantha Russell finished in double figures with 11 points. Surles led the Mountain Lions with seven rebounds, while Russell, White and Mackenzie Johnson each added six. Winters dished out five assists, while Surles and Caudell had four.
