CLINTON, Miss. | The 33-ranked Young Harris College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mississippi College Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon at Frierson Field.
The Mountain Lions (3-0) hit four home runs and limited the Choctaws (2-3) to one hit in the nightcap after Young Harris collected 12 hits in the 10-5 victory in the opener.
The two teams wrap up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. Central time contest Sunday (Feb. 9).
In the opener, every starter for the Mountain Lions but one had at least one hit and drove in a run.
Young Harris jumped on Mississippi College starter David Dun (1-1) for five runs in the first inning.
Jackson Jones and
Dahlton Cash had walks with the bases loaded before
Paul Salata drove in two with his single through the left side.
John Miller accounted for the final run with his single to left.
Brett Hawkins added an RBI single through the right side in the third and
Oscar Serratos added a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to score
Tucker Greer, who led off with a triple to left.
Cole Jackson led off the seventh with his first homer of the campaign to left field. Hawkins and
T.J. Byrd led off the eighth to with back-to-back doubles for another run before Cash led off the ninth with a homer to left field. It was his first long ball of 2020.
Pitchers
Drew Wilson (1-0) and
Chase Webb, who pitched the final four innings to earn his first save, combined to record 17 strikeouts in the win. Wilson allowed just two hits and struck out eight, while Webb allowed three hits and recorded nine punchouts.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two as Hawkins led off with a homer to right-center field. Serratos hit the first of his two home runs to lead off the fourth to give YHC a 2-0 lead. Hawkins added another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly. Byrd gave the Mountain Lions a 4-0 lead with his leadoff homer to center field to start the fifth. Young Harris took a 5-0 lead on a home run to left field in the seventh.
Greer collected two hits for the Mountain Lions, while Jones posted a double.
On the hill,
Mat Szabo (1-0) allowed one hit and struck out nine over five innings.
McLain Harris earned his second save as he struck out four over the final two innings. Harris entered the game in the sixth with the bases loaded and no one out. Harris got out of harms way as he got the first batter to strike out and then coaxed the next batter to hit into a inning-ending double play.
