MORROW, Ga. | Timi'a Swanson scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Clayton State University defeated Young Harris College 69-55 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 5) evening.
The Lakers improved to 12-9 overall and to 8-5 in the league, while the Mountain Lions fell to 12-9 and 6-7. Young Harris returns to the YHC Basketball Arena Saturday (Feb. 8) at 1:30 p.m. as they host Francis Marion University in a PBC encounter.
Clayton State used an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 14-5 lead on two free throws by Kelsie Towns with 2:27 remaining. YHC got back-to-back layups from
Jada Griffin and
Bria Clemmons at the end of the period to trim the deficit to five points (19-14). The Mountain Lions got within a point (19-18) as
Mackenzie Johnson and Griffin started the second quarter with back-to-back layup, but the Lakers used a 13-0 run to take a 14-point lead (32-18) after a Towns' three-pointer with 6:44 left before halftime.
The closest Young Harris got the remainder of the way was 10 points (63-53) after a
Sarah Woghiren layup with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter.
Clayton State outrebounded the Mountain Lions 40-26 and the Lakers made 22-of-23 free throws, while the Mountain Lions were 10-of-13.
Christal Williams added 12 points for the Lakers, while Jada Francois Lubin contributed 10.
Griffin led the Mountain Lions with a career-high 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Woghiren tallied 11 points and five rebounds.
Carly Winters finished with nine points.
