FLORENCE, S.C. | Leniel Gonzalez's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave Francis Marion University a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over No. 33 Young Harris College Friday (Feb. 28) evening at Sparrow Stadium.
The Patriots improved to 6-8 overall and to 2-4 in the league, while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-4 and 2-2. The middle game of the weekend series is Saturday (Feb. 29) at 2 p.m.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead on solo homer - his first of 2020 - to left-center by
Paul Salata in the second inning.
Oscar Serratos and
Jackson Jones each doubled in the fourth before Serratos scored on a wild pitch to give YHC a 2-0 lead.
It would stay that way until the bottom of the eighth when the Patriots pushed across a run. Tyler Magnum started the bottom of the ninth with a single off reliever
McLain Harris (0-1). Gonzalez then followed with a home run to left-center field.
Tucker Greer and Jones led the Mountain Lions with two hits each. YHC starter
Drew Wilson allowed just five hits and struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings.
