GREENEVILLE, Tenn. | Juliette Cusano's goal with 1:25 remaining in the match was the difference as Tusculum University edged Young Harris College 16-15 in a non-conference women's lacrosse match Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon at Pioneer Park.
The Pioneers improved to 2-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-2. Young Harris return to action at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Friday (Feb. 28) with a 4 p.m. match against Florida Tech.
YHC took a 1-0 lead on a
Leigh Anne Turner goal 82 seconds into the match off a
Mary Deatrick assist before Tusculum responded to score the next four goals and open up a 4-1 lead midway through the first half. Young Harris tied the game at 4 as
Taylor Greenberg scored twice, including a man-up goal and
Anna Luckie added another goal to tie the match up at 4 with 3:54 to play.
From that point neither team enjoyed more than a three-goal advantage. A Luckie strike gave the Mountain Lions a 12-9 lead with 15:37 to play in the match. However a Cusano free-position goal free-position goal tied the match at 13 with 9:05 to go.Â
The Pioneers took a 15-13 lead on an own goal with five minutes left, but a Luckie free-position goal and a
Channing Milford man-up goal off a Luckie assist tied the match at 15 with 2:22 remaining.
Luckie led the Mountain Lions with four goals and four assists, while Greenberg also tallied four goals. Turner had three goals, while Deatrick had two and Milford and
Aubrie Valvo each recorded one.
Belle Hardwick distributed three assists, while Deatrick had two and
Eryn Brown had one.
The stats were as close as the score. Young Harris held a 34-32 edge in shots and 25-20 margin in ground balls, while Tusculum held an 18-14 advantage in draw controls.
Milford led YHC with seven draw controls, while Deatrick posted four and Valvo two. Goalie
Rachel Robb, who had five saves, led the Mountain Lions with four ground balls, while
Gwenyth Gibbons, goalie
Maddy Meyers, who had three saves, and
Sarah Beckwith each scooped up three apiece.
