AMERICUS, Ga. | Young Harris College and Georgia Southwestern State University split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 22) afternoon.
The Hurricanes won the opener 2-0 before the Mountain Lions won the nightcap 3-0.
With the split, the No. 23 Mountain Lions improved to 7-3 overall and to 1-1 in the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes slipped to 4-8 and 2-3. The teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday (Feb. 23) at 1 p.m.
In the opener, Hunter Foster's two-run double in the sixth was all the offense that Tucker Smith (1-2) needed as he pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Drew Wilson (2-1) took the loss as he allowed just six hits, while striking out five.
Dahlton Cash had three hits for YHC and
Oscar Serratos added two more for the Mountain Lions, who stranded nine base runners.
Mat Szabo (3-0) and
McLain Harris, who earned his fifth save of the season, combined on a one-hitter for Young Harris in the nightcap.
Szabo didn't allow a hit through seven inning, while striking out 11 and Harris only surrender a hit and struck out three over the final two innings.
Logan Worley stroked a two-run single for the Mountain Lions in the second inning of game two before
Kyle Ayers stole home in the fourth.
Worley led the Mountain Lions with three hits in the second game, while Cash,
Jackson Jones and Ayers each tallied a double.
