AMERICUS, Ga.| Lex Chatman scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Georgia Southwestern State University rallied in the fourth quarter for a 66-62 Peach Belt Conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening at the Storm Dome.
The Hurricanes improved to 8-15 overall and 4-13 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 15-10 and 9-8. Young Harris remains on the road for a 1:30 p.m. PBC game against Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia, Saturday (Feb. 22).
Young Harris led for the majority of the first half before taking a 33-27 lead at the break. The Mountain Lions took their largest lead - 12 points (39-27) - after
Mackenzie Johnson's layup with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter. The Hurricanes took advantage off 11 YHC turnovers for eight points in the third quarter as GSW pulled within a bucket (46-44) at the end of the period.
The Mountain Lions got two
Niaya White layups and a
Carly Winters three-pointer to start the fourth quarter as YHC took a 53-46 lead with 7:09 to play. Again, GSW forced the Mountain Lions into five turnovers in the final 10 minutes and took the lead for good at 55-53 after Chatman sank a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:31 to play. The Hurricanes increased the lead to 57-53 after Chatman converted a turnover into a layup.
Young Harris pulled to 57-56 after a three-pointer from Winters with 2:29 left, but the Hurricanes' Kya Cochran responded 15 seconds with a three-pointer of her own from the left corner to retake a four-point lead. The Mountain Lions got within two points three times in the final two minutes, but Georgia Southwestern answered each time to thwart the YHC comeback.
Young Harris outrebounded the Hurricanes 53-43 and limited Georgia Southwestern to 28.4 percent shooting (23-of-81) from the floor; however, GSW scored 21 points of YHC's 30 turnovers. The Hurricanes only turned the ball over six times.
Tamecia Blue added 12 points and five steals for the Hurricanes.
White led the Mountain Lions with 12 points, while
Kalen Surles recorded a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Sarah Woghiren led YHC with 14 points, while Johnson grabbed 12. Woghiren and Johnson each finished with eight points.
