Last-second shot gives Georgia Southwestern 79-77 OT win over Young Harris

AMERICUS, Ga. | Jalemon Cameron's putback with 2.8 seconds left gave Georgia Southwestern State University a 79-77 overtime win over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening at the Storm Dorm.

The Hurricanes improved to 10-13 overall and to 5-12 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions fell to 7-18 and 5-12. Young Harris remains on the road for a 3:30 p.m. PBC game Saturday (Feb. 22) against Augusta University in Augusta, Georgia.

Georgia Southwestern took a 77-72 lead with 91 seconds left in overtime after Jamari Dean hit two free throws. The Mountain Lions got a jumper from Brian Harper 10 seconds later and then after a missed shot by the Hurricanes Harper tied the game at 77 with a three-pointer with 38.3 seconds to go. On Georgia Southwestern's next possession, Dean missed the initial shot, but Cameron put the back in to give the Hurricanes a 79-77 lead. Young Harris had one last opportunity but Brian Free's halfcourt shot rimmed out as time expired.

Young Harris forced the overtime as they wiped out a nine-point deficit (63-54) in the game's final 3:51. The Mountain Lions ended the second half on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 68 after a Harper three-pointer from the left side with 14 second remaining. Harper scored nine points during that run.

Cameroon and Kahlon Whitley each led Georgia Southwestern State with 18, while Dean had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Devon Higgs tossed in 10 points.

Harper led Young Harris with 25 points, while Kristian Collins added a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Collins was 7-of-11 from the floor, while Harper was 7-of-13. Jonathan King posted 13 points and six rebounds, while Ryle Owens added 10 points.
