Young Harris tame Bobcats 61-52

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College women's basketball team scored seven unanswered midway through the fourth quarter to break up a close game and go on to a 61-52 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia College Wednesday (Feb. 12) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 14-9 overall and to 8-7 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats fell to 5-18 and 2-13. The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday (Feb. 15) with a 1:30 p.m. PBC game against the University of South Carolina-Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina.

YHC opened up a 40-33 lead at the end of the third quarter after Sarah Woghiren hit two free throws with 37 seconds to go. However, Georgia College used a 7-2 run at the start of the fourth quarter to pull within two points (42-40) after a Harper Vick jumper in the paint with 7:09 left.  The Bobcats had two opportunities to  tie or take the lead before Young Harris went on a 7-0 run to take control of the game.

Kalen Surles started the rally with a layup before Bria Clemmons added a layup and an old-fashioned three-point play to open up a 49-40 lea with 2:47 to play.The closest the Bobcats would get the rest of the way was five points (51-46) as the Mountain Lions hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Young Harris, which outrebounded Georgia College 43-37, led the Bobcats 11-2 in second-chance points. 

Niaya White scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. Clemmons added 14 points and six assists, while Carly Winters had 10 points and five rebounds. Woghiren tallied eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jada Griffin also added eight rebounds.

Vick led the Bobcats with 19 points, while Caroline Wysocki added 10.
