Mountain Lions pull away from Saints late 69-62

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. | Niaya White scored a career-high 26 points and Young Harris College used a 12-3 run midway in the fourth quarter to pull away from Flagler College 69-62 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday (Jan. 20) afternoon at Flagler Gym.

The Mountain Lions improved to 10-6 on the season and to 4-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Saints sank to 4-10 and 2-6. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 22) when they host Georgia Southwestern State University in a 5:30 p.m. PBC game at the YHC Basketball Arena.

In a game that saw 14 lead changes and 12 ties, Flagler took a 53-51 layup on a Jazzy Mathis layup with 7:54 remaining in the game. YHC's Haylie Shope tied the game for the final time at 53 as she hit a jumper six seconds later. That jumper started a 12-3 run for the Mountain Lions. A three-pointer from Carly Winters with 6:57 to play gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 56-53 and Young Harris expanded its lead to seven points (63-56) on a White layup with 2:53 to go.

Flagler got as close as three points (63-60) after Kierra Crane hit a three-pointer with 2:08 to go, but Winters thwarted the comeback and she sank a three-pointer on the Mountain Lions' next possession.

White, who was 9-of-18 from the floor, also grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the Mountain Lions. Sarah Woghiren added 16 points, while Winters, who hit four three-pointers, finished with 12. Kalen Surles added seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for Young Harris.
