YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Faison Brock scored a career-high 43 points to lead the University of South Carolina-Aiken past Young Harris College 104-91 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Pacers improved to 12-6 overall and to 8-0 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-12 and 1-6. YHC hits the road for a 3:30 p.m. league tilt against Flagler College Monday (Jan. 20) in St. Augustine, Florida.
Young Harris jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as
Paul Miller hit a three-pointer and then sank three more free throws, but the Pacers took the lead for good at 10-9 after Xzavier Barmore hit a free throw with 14:53 to play. That was the first of eight unanswered points by USC Aiken that saw the Pacers open up a 16-9 lead on two free throws by Brock, who was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, with 13:09 left.
The Mountain Lions got it back within a point at 17-16 on a
Kristian Collins layup with 11:38 to play, but the Pacers used a 9-0 n to take a 26-16 lead on Barmore's deep three-pointer less than two minutes later. Young Harris battled back get within four points at the half (44-40) after an old-fashioned three-point play by
Brian Harper with 22 seconds left.
YHC trimmed the deficit to two points (50-48) after
Seth McCoy sank a three-pointer with 17:18 left in the game. However, the Pacers responded with eight unanswered points to take a 58-48 lead after a layup by Dhieu Deing with 16:28 remaining. Brock, who was 16-of-20 from the floor, scored six of his 29 points in the second half during the run.
The Pacers pushed their lead to as many as 14 points before the Mountain Lions got it with six points (86-80) on a
Nate Louis layup with 5:47 left, but that would be as close as YHC would get as USC Aiken used an 11-1 run to open up a 16-point lead (97-81) to put the game out of reach.
Brock added six assists, five rebounds and four steals for the Pacers, who shot 75 percent (18-of-24) from the floor in the second half. Barmore contributed 21 points, six assists and five steals, while Deing added 14 points.
Ryle Owens led the Mountain Lions with 26 points as he was 8-of-15 from the floor, including hitting 7-of-12 three-pointers. Miller and Louis each added 11 points, while Harper added 10 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Louis pulled down a team-high nine reboounds, including five on the offensive glass.
