YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored three unanswered goals in the final five minutes as the Mountain Lions edged the University of Alabama in Huntsville 20-18 in a Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse match Sunday (April 7) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse FIeld.
With the win, the Mountain Lions improved to 8-5 overall and moved into first place in the GSC by a half game with a 5-1 mark, while the Chargers fell to 11-3 and 4-1. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 13) at 5 p.m. when they travel to Salisbury, North Carolina, to face Catawba College.
Back-to-back goals from
Taylor Greenberg gave the Mountain Lions a 17-12 lead with 15:25 remaining in the match, but UAH responded with six unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take an 18-17 advantage on a man-up goal from Elizabeth Brown with 5:13 to go. But the Mountain Lions took advantage of six yellow cards and one red card issued to the Chargers, to knot the score at 18 on a man-up goal from Greenberg off a
Hayley Bartlett pass 47 seconds later.
Bartlett gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 19-18 on her free-position shot with 94 seconds left in the match. Bartlett led Young Harris with six goals and four assists. The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal 31 seconds later as
Anna Luckie scored a man-up goal off an
Erika Cross pass.
Mary Deatrick added five goals, while Greenberg finished with four.
Channing Milford and
Leigh Anne Turner added two goals each. Cross finished with three assists, while Deatrick, Luckie and
Maddie Peek had one assist apiece.
Luckie led the Mountain Lions with six draw control victories, while Deatrick tallied five and
Eryn Brown had three. Millford,
Kirsten Barth, Greenberg and Cross each posted two draw controls. Eight different YHC players had two ground balls each. Goalie
Rachel Robb had seven saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
UAH held a 35-34 advantage in shots and 24-18 in ground balls, while Young Harris had a 21-18 margin in draw controls.
