YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader with No. 9 University of North Georgia Saturday (April 6) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions took game one 9-0 before dropping the nightcap 11-2. Young Harris improved to 24-13 overall and 11-8 in the PBC, while the Nighthawks fell to 26-10 and 14-7. The Mountain Lions travel to Mars Hill, North Carolina, Wednesday (April 10) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Mars Hill University.
Zavier Lushington hit his team-leading eighth home run of the year to right center in the bottom of the first inning to gave Young Harris a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Washington made it a 2-0 game for the Mountain Lions with a single down the left field line that scored Lushington in the fourth inning.
Corley Reynolds added two more runs in the fourth with a two RBI single to center field.
Young Harris put up two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh with back-to-back RBI singles from
Dahlton Cash and
Cole Jackson.
Dylan Gibeau (5-2) picked up the win for the Mountain Lions as he allowed four hits with six walks and five strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Washington and Reynolds each had one hit and two RBI. Lushington collected two hits, one RBI, and three runs scored, while Jackson and Cash each had two hits, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Derrick Pickvet (5-2) earned the loss for the Nighthawks as he gave up nine runs (three unearned) on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
North Georgia struck first in game two with a three-run homer to left field from Conner Corbitt in the second inning.
Ethan Underwood put Young Harris on the board in the bottom of the second with a RBI ground out to shortstop that scored Jackson.
Jackson added the second run of the game for the Mountain Lions with a solo home run to left field, his fifth of the season. The Nighthawks added three runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth inning.
Cade Heil (2-1) picked up the win for UNG as he pitched a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Drew Wilson (2-3) earned the loss for Young Harris as he gave up seven runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Jackson went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored, while Underwood had one hit and a RBI.
Brett Hawkins, Lushington, Washington, and
Tristin Smith all had one hit.
